Located in the mesmerizing White Mountains, Boundary Peak stands as the northernmost peak with an elevation surpassing 13,000 feet. Set against the stunning scenery of Esmeralda County in southwestern Nevada, this summit is surrounded by the beautiful Boundary Peak Wilderness, which is included in the renowned Inyo National Forest.
Remarkably, Boundary Peak finds itself in close proximity to the California state line, which awarded it its distinctive moniker. Notably, although it remains the pinnacle of Nevada’s elevation, it rests in the shadow of the considerably taller Montgomery Peak (13,441 feet) just a short distance away across the state line in California.
Under the majority of definitions, Boundary Peak, with its modest prominence of 253 feet, assumes its role as a sub-peak to Montgomery Peak.
Staggeringly, Boundary Peak only surpasses Wheeler Peak, situated in the eastern reaches of White Pine County within the renowned Great Basin National Park, by a mere 82 feet. By widely accepted definitions, Wheeler Peak proudly claims the title of the loftiest independent mountain within the beautiful state of Nevada. The peak is located within the Inyo National Forest and is a popular destination for hikers and mountain climbers.
If driving west on US 6, turn south onto SR 264 6 miles west of Coaldale and go 14 miles south to Trail Creek turnoff. If from the south, look for Trail Creek turnoff 27 miles north of Oasis, a cluster of ranches near junction of CA SR 168 and 266. Main season: June – October.
